Torontos Hot Docs Festival Focuses on Formidable Filmmakers

As any film buff will tell you, Toronto’s Hot Docs Festival is the place to be every spring. The documentary film festival has grown to be the largest of its kind in North America. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the festival and is sure to be an extraordinary experience.

More than 150 of the world’s best documentaries will be shown during the festival’s run. This year the focus according to the festival’s director of programming, Shane Smith, is on, "Formidable filmmakers, in unrelenting pursuit of the truth". With that sentiment in mind, 50 percent of the films being shown have been made by female filmmakers.

This year Hot Docs runs from April 26 to May 6 and, if previous years are any indication, should draw over 200,000 visitors during its run. A group of theatres in the heart of Toronto play host to the bustling activity. The Hot Docs Cinema, which is a century old landmark theatre in the Annex area that’s been lovingly renewed to its former glory, has been given a new purpose with the festivities. TIFF Bell Lightbox also plays host to some of the festival’s offerings.

Between shows there’s plenty of other activities to enjoy at the festival. Forums, conference sessions and the Doc Shop allow you to completely immerse yourself in the world of documentaries. Passes and packages can be purchased ahead of the event. Ticket packages come in 6, 10 and 20 packs and can be used in any configuration you’d like. There is also a discount for those who purchase early.
